The Lagos State Government has called for calm and understanding from residents following flash flooding across multiple communities, and Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has approved the immediate dredging and maintenance of 28 additional primary channels.
Commissioner for Environment Tokunbo Wahab said the rainfall was an extreme weather event, producing an unusually high volume of water that overwhelmed drainage channels, causing temporary flooding in Victoria Island, Lekki, Ikeja, Gbagada, Mushin, Mafoloku, and other areas.
Wahab noted similar heavy rainfalls affected other African countries and North America. He stressed that residents have a role to play by keeping drains clear and avoiding illegal reclamation of wetlands.
