The committee, chaired by Senator Ibrahim Dankwambo, is probing N107 trillion classified as receivables and N103 trillion recorded as payables. Senators rejected the auditors’ request for two weeks to make submissions, citing constitutional powers to demand documents.

Senator Abdul Ningi cited Sections 88 and 89 of the 1999 Constitution, while Senator Adams Oshiomhole stressed that the auditors are responsible for their audit work and must answer questions. Dankwambo said the inability to reconcile the figures is “deeply concerning.”

Key Points:

Public trust in NNPC’s financial management is eroded by unreconciled figures.
The N210trn gap could indicate systemic accountability failures in the oil sector.
Taxpayers deserve transparency in the management of national oil revenues.
The probe signals the Senate’s determination to enforce financial accountability.
Timing of the probe, ahead of the 2027 elections, may influence political discourse.

The auditors’ submission within the one-week deadline and any further revelations about NNPC’s financial records.
