“They Destroyed My Shop” – Nigerian Returnees from South Africa Share Harrowing Stories

Nigerians evacuated from South Africa have shared harrowing stories of losing businesses and livelihoods amid renewed xenophobic attacks, according to Leadership.

The 271 returnees arrived in Lagos aboard an Air Peace flight at about 10:35 a.m. as part of the Federal Government’s voluntary evacuation programme.

Emmanuela Akagosu, who lived in South Africa since 2017, said she fled with only two boxes, describing the country as “not safe at all” with constant threats to “leave or be killed.” Sandy Oris, an Anambra indigene who relocated 14 years ago, called it “the biggest mistake” of his life after his shop was destroyed and goods looted.
