Lagos Govt Calls for Calm, Approves 28 Drainage Channels After Flash Floods

The Lagos State Government has called for calm and understanding from residents following flash flooding across multiple communities, and Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has approved the immediate dredging and maintenance of 28 additional primary channels.
Commissioner for Environment Tokunbo Wahab said the rainfall was an extreme weather event, producing an unusually high volume of water that overwhelmed drainage channels, causing temporary flooding in Victoria Island, Lekki, Ikeja, Gbagada, Mushin, Mafoloku, and other areas.
Wahab noted similar heavy rainfalls affected other African countries and North America. He stressed that residents have a role to play by keeping drains clear and avoiding illegal reclamation of wetlands.
Key Points:
Flooding continues to disrupt daily life and transportation across Lagos
The government’s response signals an acknowledgement of infrastructure gaps
Climate change is intensifying rainfall, making flooding more frequent
Residents’ actions—dumping waste, building on drainage alignments- worsen the crisis
Coastal cities like Lagos face unique hydrological challenges
The government is investing in drainage infrastructure, but residents must also cooperate. More heavy rainfall is expected as the rainy season continues.
