Benue LGA Chairman Confirms Suspected Herders’ Attacks Kill 18

According to reports from Zagazola Makama, a counter‑insurgency publication, the assaults began on Friday when armed men invaded farmlands at Akpachi village, killing two farmers.
The attackers returned in the early hours of Sunday, striking Otukpo‑Nobi community at about 4:00 a.m., killing at least 16 sleeping residents and injuring several others. Local volunteers and security personnel are searching for missing persons, with the casualty figure feared to be higher.
Otukpo LGA chairman Maxwell Ogiri confirmed both attacks and said preliminary findings suggest they may be reprisals for the killing of Benue MACBAN chairman Ardo Risku Mohammed two weeks earlier.
The violence triggered protests on Sunday, with youths carrying victims’ bodies to the palace of the Och’Idoma and barricading roads, demanding urgent government intervention.
Key Points:
Farming communities face heightened insecurity, disrupting livelihoods and food supply.
Displacement and fear of further attacks may force more residents to abandon homes.
Local government and security agencies face mounting pressure over failure to protect civilians.
Reprisal cycle between herders and farming communities deepens ethnic and communal tensions.
Timing of attacks, just weeks after a peace meeting killing, undermines reconciliation efforts.
Authorities will likely intensify security patrols and probe retaliatory motives, while protesters’ demands for action may force the state government to respond publicly.

Dangote Industries Launches N500k Whistleblower Reward to Curb Illegal Truck Use

In a statement on Sunday, the conglomerate said the move is part of efforts to curb unauthorised haulage activities and protect the integrity of its nationwide logistics operations.
The company warned that only approved products are permitted to be conveyed by trucks belonging to its subsidiaries, with each subsidiary restricted to specific goods: cement, limestone, gypsum, coal and clinker for Dangote Cement; sugar products for Dangote Sugar; and urea fertiliser for Dangote Fertiliser, among others.
Drivers and owners of unauthorised goods risk arrest, confiscation of cargo and prosecution. The company said law enforcement agencies have been authorised to arrest drivers found using Dangote trucks for unauthorised commercial haulage. Dedicated hotlines have been established across operations to receive reports.
Key Points:
Whistleblower reward may encourage public participation in combating logistics fraud.
Unauthorised haulage using branded trucks could undermine Dangote’s brand integrity and operational efficiency.
The company protects its assets while offenders face arrest, cargo confiscation, and prosecution.
Initiative signals growing corporate commitment to transparency and accountability in logistics.
Timing aligns with heightened scrutiny of private sector compliance and corporate governance standards.
Effectiveness of the whistleblower programme will depend on public trust and the company’s willingness to act on reports, with potential implications for other logistics operators
