A relaxing trip can quickly turn into a nightmare if bedbugs follow you home. These tiny, flat, wingless pests — often tan, brown, or reddish-brown — are expert hitchhikers, easily latching onto luggage, clothing, and personal items without being noticed.
What starts as a pleasant getaway can lead to sleepless nights, constant itching, and the stress of dealing with a full-blown infestation.
However, being mindful of how bedbugs spread and taking a few simple precautions while travelling can go a long way in keeping your home safe.
Inspect your hotel room immediately
Don’t settle in as soon as you arrive. Check the mattress seams, bed corners, headboard, and pillows for small dark spots, shed skins, or tiny insects. Using a torchlight can help you inspect these areas more closely, as bedbugs tend to gather in warm, hidden spots.
Also check nearby furniture like bedside tables and curtains. Spotting signs early allows you to request a room change before your belongings are exposed.
Keep your luggage off the bed and floor
Placing your suitcase on the bed or carpet increases the risk of bedbugs crawling inside. Use a luggage rack if available. If not, set your bag on a hard surface like a table, or keep it in the bathroom – tiled areas are less likely to harbour bedbugs.
If you’re staying for a short time, avoid unpacking your clothes or spreading items around the room. A plastic or protective luggage cover can also create a barrier, making it harder for bedbugs to get into your bag.
Check your belongings before leaving
Before you check out, take time to carefully inspect your suitcase, clothes, and personal items. Bedbugs are small and can easily hide without being noticed. Pay close attention to seams, folds, pockets, and zippers – their favourite hiding spots.
A final check before departure can help you spot early signs and avoid unknowingly bringing bedbugs home.
Wash and dry clothes immediately after returning home
Preventing bedbugs doesn’t end at the hotel, it’s important to stay cautious once you get home. Avoid placing your luggage on your bed, and if possible, don’t take it straight into your bedroom.
Take your clothes directly to the laundry and wash them in hot water, then dry them on high heat. Heat is highly effective at killing bedbugs and their eggs.
Clean and isolate your luggage
After unpacking, vacuum your suitcase thoroughly, especially along seams and corners where bedbugs can hide. If possible, leave your luggage in a garage, balcony, or another isolated area for a while instead of bringing it directly into your living space.
