In a statement issued on Sunday, Tinubu celebrated Soyinka’s remarkable accomplishments in literature and the arts, as well as his advocacy for democracy and accountable leadership.
The President recalled Soyinka winning the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1986, becoming the first African to win in that category, and highlighted Soyinka’s valiant struggle against military dictatorship for decades.
Tinubu also noted their shared role in the June 12 struggle to restore democracy after the annulment of the 1993 presidential election, saying they were “both in the trenches.”
Describing Soyinka as one of Nigeria’s greatest national treasures, the President said his enduring presence is “a gift we will always treasure” and wished “Kongi” many more years in excellent health.
